bestialbenedict:

One of my favorite things about The Demon’s Lexicon is the way that a lot of the really beautiful, loving lines—“There is nothing in two worlds I love half as much as you,” “Sometimes I want to be human for you,” “Alan would always be his favorite” and a few the ones Mae muses about Alan desperately wanting to be loved—are not between a main antihero and main love interest. They’re not even romantic. They’re between the two brothers, and given that there’s not a ton of Romance in the books, ‘d really say the Love Story plotline is platonic/familial and I just find it really beautiful

It’s absolutely right that the sibling love stories of those books are indeed very much the same as the arcs for any love stories. I mean, like so…

The Demon’s Lexicon

CHARACTER A: believes Character B may have another object of affection! And be keeping secrets!

CHARACTER A: Violates some privacy and feels their suspicions proven 100% true!

CHARACTER A: throws enormous fit!

CHARACTER B: kisses Character A and assures Character A that Character B’s love is, in fact, deep and unchanging like unto the ocean. As it turns out, Characters A & B love each other very much.

The Demon’s Covenant

CHARACTER A: learns that Character B kept a secret from A and is mad, since Character A always protects Character B!

CHARACTER A: acts out in hurtful ways to Character B.

CHARACTER B: now Character B is mad too!

CHARACTER A: But when Character A is low, despite the fact they’re both mad, guess who can’t stay away and has to comfort Character A…

CHARACTER B: And when Character B is low, guess who always comes through to console Character B…

CHARACTERS A & B: realise that they have a support system aside from each other.

CHARACTERS A & B: yet when tragedy strikes are the no. 1 person they both turn to.

CHARACTER A: learns A does not always have to protect B, though A may always want to, and learn to let B go (and know B will come back if B can.) Because A and B are their own independent people, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other very much.

The Demon’s Surrender

CHARACTER A: is super into their job.

CHARACTER B: has a secret that could torpedo that job.

CHARACTER A: hides secret out of love for Character B.

CHARACTER B: secret blown wide open.

CHARACTER A: throws it all away for Character B.

CHARACTER A: starts new life where Character A is actually happier, and where Character A will never be parted from Character B—because they love each other very much.

The throughline is easiest to spot in Lexicon, since it’s before the cast of important characters and interconnected relationships gets so big, but I did write the Demon’s Lexicon series because I wanted to write about epic love that was familial. And I think it’s interesting, to think about all the different love stories there can be… and how essential love is to so many stories.

TLDR: I meant to do that and I’m so glad people liked it. ;)

My Mae, who is responsible for my continued fascination with pink hair (sorry for staring at you all night long pink-haired bartender!), and demon circles and a bridge whose supports totally bear human weight (trust me.)

She got it now. She was kind of in love with him. It had never happened to her before, and he would not have even the slightest idea how to love her back. (Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon’s Covenant)

I write so beautifully and lyrically of love. DISASTER! WARNING! BAD IDEA! BETTER TO DRINK THE MILK THAT’S A WEEK OUT OF DATE!
Lil pink hair!

Clara Bowdlerized: [NONSENSE] Ladies, make out all you want.

clarabowdlerized:

sarahreesbrennan:

the last time I saw someone criticising one of my heroines for making out with too many people… was yesterday.

My friends, that is some nonsense right there.

**SPOILERS AHEAD** So Mae, from SRB’s The Demon’s Lexicon series, is a pretty young thing with many romantical…

What a lovely thing to find in my tag. A gorgeous essay about Mae from the Demon’s Lexicon and her makin’ out ways.

I have to say it just never occurred to me anyone would ever care how many people a single lassie made out with. When I was seventeen, I made out with well over a hundred people.

Mostly in Irish college. You see, mostly I talk a lot. But in Irish college you can only speak Irish, and I am TERRIBLE at Irish. So instead I would stare in limpid confusion at dudes.

DUDE: *incomprehensible gibberish*

SARAH: *staaaare*

DUDE: *incomprehensible gibberish*

SARAH: Kiss me you mad fool.

DUDE: She was overcome by my witty repartee!

SARAH: I was overcome with the desire for you to be quiet.

Forced… to speak the language of l’amour!

It is possible that many of those dudes were just asking me what the time was. Oh well!

Girls can make out or not make out as they please. Boys too. My basic rules for people are: Do your best not to hurt others, be honest… and then do what you want.

This shouldn’t be a big deal. ;)

Fictional Reality.: “I used to have a friend called Mark who had a pet tortoise,” Jamie...

“I used to have a friend called Mark who had a pet tortoise,” Jamie said. “His name was Sinbad. I’m not sure why. Mark totally made us all play with the tortoise like it was another kid. And he used to say things like ‘Sinbad’s feeling a bit under the weather today’ or ‘Sinbad doesn’t like this…

*beams*

I was just thinking about how I hope I can share more short stories soon.
