Creators Being Right Or Wrong
The author is dead! But I am… an author… Am I a VAMPYRE?
I always think when I am writing that ‘people will like this, or they’ll think this’ and sometimes, of course, they do, but sometimes they think completely different things, or like stuff I didn’t expect them to like! And sometimes they don’t like things I write, and that makes me unhappy, obviously. Sometimes they like stuff I didn’t expect/notice, see my books differently than I ever did and like it, and well, hey. That doesn’t make me unhappy. Why would it?
As long as they like it, I am cool with it.
As those followin’ my tumblr may know, I loooove the TV show Revenge, and I want the badass wounded-soul-brilliant-schemer heroine Emily-real-name-secretly-Amanda to end up with her friend, Nolan ‘Taunts People With Fashion’ Ross.
Yet the creator has said they have more of a sibling vibe.
Don’t care, my friend! I interpret the text differently!
JACK (Emily’s primary love interest) AND EMILY’S FIRST MEETING: Childhood closeness, playing with a puppy on a beach, burying Emily’s dad in the sand.
NOLAN AND EMILY’S FIRST MEETING: Everybody is an adult. Heated confrontation outside Emily’s prison where they discuss murder, conspiracy and billions of dollars change hands.
… Which one of these seems more sibling-y to me? Hey, I call the cues like I see ‘em.
Authorial intent does matter—but it isn’t the be-all and end-all. What matters is that people enjoy.
